MR. EDMUND R. COMER - Submitted by Billy Smith
"Eddie" Comer, son of Thomas H. and Emma M. Comer, was born May 08, 1897 in the Wauneta, Kansas area and died March 07, 1904 at his home. In the death of Eddie Comer we have one of the saddest tragedies that has ever befallen the people of this community.

On the day of his death he had eaten a hearty dinner and then had gone to the field to husk corn fodder, returning in the evening with his corn. He had come out of the cornfield and into the pasture about a quarter of a mile east of the Comer house and had closed the gate and climbed into the wagon. On Sunday he had been to Wauneta and traded Clark Stevens out of a hammerless revolver. The tripper would sometimes catch when stuck and it is supposed that Edd was examining it. The ball passed into the corner of his right eye without cutting the lid and ranged around the back of his skull, causing a bulged ridge for almost three inches, losing its force and not passing out.

About twenty minutes after he had driven through the gate his sister, Cora, seeing the team still standing, went to them. Taking the unconscious boy in her lap she drove quickly to the house where he lived about half-an-hour, never speaking a word. The revolver was found in the cornfield with a single empty shell in it that had done the deed. Dr. Hahn was sent for and decided it was not necessary to hold a coroner's inquest.

Edd was about eighteen years old and an industrious boy with many friends. He seemed to love his home and did not run around as other boys do. He had spent the winter in school where he was quiet and studious but as the spring work came on he willingly assumed his part of it.

The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Villars at the family home after which the remains were laid to rest in the Denick cemetery followed by a concourse of more than fifty families. The bereaved family has the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.

MR. W. H. COPPLE - 1908 - submitted by Lena Seng

W. H. Copple was born March 25, 1843, in Polk County, Missouri, and died in Sedan, Kansas, February 26, 1908, aged 64 years, 11 months, and 2 days. He came to Kansas when about eleven years of age, and has resided on a farm a short distance west of Sedan since about 1870. At the age of 19 he enlisted in the Union Army and served his country faithfully for three years. He has ben married twice. The first union were born four children, three of whom are still living. His first wife having died, he married the companion who survives him in 1876. To this union were born four children, all of whom are still living.

Mr. Copple had never enjoyed very good health since the war, and for the last two years he had been incapacitated for any active service. Finally becoming unable personally to look after the farm, he rented out his farm and moved to Sedan last fall to be near the doctor and where he could be more free from care. Much of the time during the last year or two he had been confined to this bed, and several times he had been near death's door. Having recently purchased the John's property near the mill, he moved into it on Tuesday the 25th. He felt unusually well during the day and rested will at night, but on Wednesday morning about nine o'clock he passed quietly and easily away, having remained in bed all the morning.

After death struck him, he tried to speak to his wife, but could not. His death was quite sudden and apparently painless. The immediate cause of his death was doubtless heart failure, as his heart, as well as his lungs, had been troubling him, together with some other complications.

Mr. Copple was one of the old settlers of Chautauqua county, and was well respected by his neighbors and a large number of acquaintances, as was manifested by the large funeral.

The funeral services were conducted from the family residence by Rev. J.N. Kidd, of the Baptist church, assisted by Rev. J.J. Dunham. of the Presbyterian church and his remains were laid to rest in the west cemetery.

They dated before he was inducted into the Navy and were married in San Francisco on Sept. 8, 1945, immediately after he returned from active duty in the Pacific.

When Harold was released from the service in 1946, they returned to Kansas and began farming with one of Harold’s uncles near Atlanta. After a short time, they purchased their farm west of Cedar Vale. There, they raised their three children: Craig, Cary, and Mary Jo (Jodi).

Luvada loved that farm and truly believed the view from her kitchen table was among the best anywhere. However, in recent years, Cary learned that it was not her original intention to live a farming life. Her desire was to return to Wichita, attend college, and have a career of her own. Although farming wasn’t her dream, it was the passion of the man she loved. She followed his lead and became an integral part of the farming operation. For many years, she was actively involved in the day-to-day activities on the farm: feeding calves, cooking meals during harvest, running to get parts to fix broken equipment, and keeping the books, just to name a few. And doing laundry, lots and lots of laundry.

As they started considering retirement, Luvada and Harold began traveling to the Rio Grande Valley for short vacations in the early 1980s. By the mid-80s they officially became “snowbirds, purchasing a home and spending the winter months at the Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr, Texas. They would return to Kansas in the spring to be near family, take care of things on the farm, and travel.

In retirement, Luvada’s favorite activities were traveling (she and Harold traveled extensively throughout the continental United States and Canada), dancing, reading, watching old movies on TV, working crosswords and other word puzzles, and spending time with family and friends.

Luvada was preceded in death by Harold, her husband of 58 years; son, Craig; daughter, Mary Jo; brothers, Lionel and Leland; and sister, LoRee.

Luvada is survived by son, Cary (Suzan) Coulter; daughter-inlaw, Yvonne Coulter; grandchildren, Erica Coulter (Matt Mayo), Christopher Coulter, Rustin Coulter (Joy Gauderman); and sister, Maxine Dewey.

Interment will be held at the Cedar Vale Cemetery on May 13, 2015 at 11 a.m. Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on May 22 at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the First Baptist Church, 418 Monroe St., Cedar Vale, KS 67024. To leave a message for the family please go to www.dickensfuneral. com.

MR. J. K. CROCKETT
J. K. CROCKETT DEAD
An Invalid and Unable to Escape Flames.
GAS EXPLOSION CAUSE OF DEATH

Family Witness His Horrible Death
as the Flames Take Away His Life

The entire population of Sedan and Chautauqua county were shocked Tuesday morning when at an early hour, the terrible intelligence was circulated that J. K. Crockett was burned alive and his body cremated in the dwelling house of his son Kelly Crockett, a mile and a half west of Farmersburg.

At the time of the conflagration Mr. Crockett was confined to his own apartments, which were on the grouud floor and was a semi-invalid, at times being unable to move about. A few days prior to this he had sustained injuries from a fall. Kelly Crockett was away from the home attending to his usual morning duties about the place, while both Mrs. J. K. and Mrs. Kelly Crockett were eating their morning meal in a room at the rear ef the house. Suddenly all three were electrified by a loud explosion, and discovered the house was afire.

The first thought of all was for the aged and helpless invalid and they forced an entrance to his rooms only to be beaten back time an again by the cruel flames. Despite the dense smoke they could see that he was still alive and his suffering as he lay there with the flames closing around him cutting him off from all human aid from loving hands reaching out to him through a gulf of flames can only he imagined.

However great his agony, it was exceeded in the hearts of that loving wife and those children who were almost frenzied as they watched him perish before their eyes.

Only the charred dismembered trunk was recovered of what was once this kindly, loyal geutleman, Mr. Crockett was a man of spotless character aud blameless life and was widely known, being one of the pioneers of the county. He settled at Jonesburg in the early '70's and his neighbors who knew him intimately, appreciated the lofty generosity of his dealings, which were prompted by a pure heart and earnest purpose.

It is not known exactly how the fire originated but it is supposed that it was caused by escaping gas from a rubber hose attached to the stove. The dwelling bouse, which was a two story frame, with practically all its contents, was burned to the ground.

In her heroic efforts to rescue her father-law, Mrs. Kelly Crockett was badly burned on the hands. Dr. Fred Calhoun was called from Peru to dress the wound, which though very painful, will not prove serious.

When so great a calamity has befallen a family, there seems little that can be said to comfort them, but they bare the deepest
commiseration and sincerest sympathy of all.

The funeral was from the Church of Christ Tuesday the 9th, 3 p.m. conducted by B. F. Martin and interment in the Cedar Vale cemetery.
