Amish Friendship Bread Recipe - Amy Marie (1)

My introduction to Amish Friendship bread making came in the form of a heavenly loaf of bread packaged with instructions stapled to a ziploc bag full of ….quite frankly, a substance that looked like runny, bubbly goo.

The Amish Friendship Bread was so tasty and delicious that I consumed the entire loaf in the course of a couple of late evening hours. I was devastated when I went back to get another piece and found it empty. I mean scrape the pan empty!

So I pulled out my Ziploc bag of starter and instructions and set out to replicate that delicious loaf of bread in my own kitchen.

The recipe is quite easy and doesn’t require vast culinary skills. It’s a perfect recipe to start your journey into breadmaking. I have included a printable of the recipe below if you just want to get right to it. If you need a bit more explanation, read on…..

Start by preheating your oven to 325°. Go ahead and grease a couple of loaf pans. I use bakers spray. My favorite is Bakers Joy but any kind works. Then sprinkle each pan with a good dusting of cinnamon sugar mixture. (See the notes in the recipe for how to make this)

In a large mixing bowl, add all of your wet ingredients. Then add all of your dry ingredients. Some recipes will say you have to do this in a certain order, but for this recipe I have not found any difference if I accidentally put the sugar in before the flour. Give it all a good mixing with a wooden spoon, just to get it all combined well. Evenly divide the batter between your two loaf pans and give them another dusting of the cinnamon sugar mixture.

Pop them in the oven and set a timer for 55 minutes.

Go drink a cup of coffee….. or if you want you could give your kitchen a quick clean up. (I prefer the coffee.)

Enjoy the aroma of cinnamon goodness that is starting to permeate your home. MMmmm….

When your timer goes off, stick a toothpick in and check for doneness. If it comes out clean, remove the loaves to a wire rack and allow them to cool off just a bit. If it does not come out clean, give them another 5 minutes and check again.

Once the breads have cooled off just a bit, fix another cup of coffee, grab a slice (or two) and sit down and enjoy! You won’t regret it.

And as the name suggests, share a loaf along with a bag of starter and instructions with a friend! You never know what it will start. (Thank you Michelle!)

This is the EXACT recipe that we started with that led to the creation of The Cottage Cafe. We began selling breads like this at our local Farmer’s Market. As our customer base grew, we eventually branched out and opened our Cafe where we now sell breads like this one and many many other variations.

Notes

Cinnamon Sugar Mixture: Mix 1/2 cup granulated sugar to 2 tsp of cinnamon. Use to dust the loaf pans and reserve enough to sprinkle over the top of each loaf before baking.

If you do not have instant pudding on hand, you can omit, but it does give the bread a delicious flavor and moistness.

This is the basic recipe but you can get creative and toss in your favorite add ins. Chocolate Chips, Cinnamon Chips, raisins, and nuts are all great additions. Just add 1 cup to your batter and combine.
