Introduction

Anything that can be derived from the application state, should be. Automatically.

MobX is a signal based, battle-tested library that makes state management simple and scalable by transparently applying functional reactive programming. The philosophy behind MobX is simple:

馃槞

Straightforward

Write minimalistic, boilerplate-free code that captures your intent. Trying to update a record field? Simply use a normal JavaScript assignment 鈥 the reactivity system will detect all your changes and propagate them out to where they are being used. No special tools are required when updating data in an asynchronous process.

馃殔

Effortless optimal rendering

All changes to and uses of your data are tracked at runtime, building a dependency tree that captures all relations between state and output. This guarantees that computations that depend on your state, like React components, run only when strictly needed. There is no need to manually optimize components with error-prone and sub-optimal techniques like memoization and selectors.

馃す馃徎鈥嶁檪锔

Architectural freedom

MobX is unopinionated and allows you to manage your application state outside of any UI framework. This makes your code decoupled, portable, and above all, easily testable.

A quick example

So what does code that uses MobX look like?

import React from "react"import ReactDOM from "react-dom"import { makeAutoObservable } from "mobx"import { observer } from "mobx-react-lite"// Model the application state.function createTimer() { return makeAutoObservable({ secondsPassed: 0, increase() { this.secondsPassed += 1 }, reset() { this.secondsPassed = 0 } })}const myTimer = createTimer()// Build a "user interface" that uses the observable state.const TimerView = observer(({ timer }) => ( <button onClick={() => timer.reset()}>Seconds passed: {timer.secondsPassed}</button>))ReactDOM.render(<TimerView timer={myTimer} />, document.body)// Update the 'Seconds passed: X' text every second.setInterval(() => { myTimer.increase()}, 1000)

The observer wrapper around the TimerView React component will automatically detect that renderingdepends on the timer.secondsPassed observable, even though this relationship is not explicitly defined. The reactivity system will take care of re-rendering the component when precisely that field is updated in the future.

Every event (onClick / setInterval) invokes an action (myTimer.increase / myTimer.reset) that updates observable state (myTimer.secondsPassed).Changes in the observable state are propagated precisely to all computations and side effects (TimerView) that depend on the changes being made.

The philosophy and benefits of the mental model provided by MobX are also described in great detail in the blog posts UI as an afterthought and How to decouple state and UI (a.k.a. you don鈥檛 need componentWillMount).

Credits

MobX is inspired by reactive programming principles, which are for example used in spreadsheets. It is inspired by model鈥搗iew鈥搗iewmodel frameworks like MeteorJS's Tracker, Knockout and Vue.js, but MobX brings transparent functional reactive programming (TFRP, a concept which is further explained in the MobX book) to the next level and provides a standalone implementation. It implements TFRP in a glitch-free, synchronous, predictable and efficient manner.

A ton of credit goes to Mendix for providing the flexibility and support to maintain MobX and the chance to prove the philosophy of MobX in a real, complex, performance critical applications.

FAQs

About MobX 路 MobX 馃嚭馃嚘? 鈥

MobX is unopinionated and allows you to manage your application state outside of any UI framework. This makes your code decoupled, portable, and above all, easily testable.

What does MobX do? 鈥

MobX will make sure that all changes to the application state caused by your actions are automatically processed by all derivations and reactions. Synchronously and glitch-free.

Why MobX is better than Redux? 鈥

Redux stands out for its structured nature and predictability, making it ideal for complex projects. In contrast, MobX offers a concise syntax and simplified reactivity, making it better for applications seeking simplicity.

Who invented MobX? 鈥

Michel Weststrate creator of Mobx and Immer Libraries for JavaScript.

Why do we use MobX in React? 鈥

MobX is a state management library, it allows transparent state management and can be used when you require complex state management in your React applications.

What are the core concepts of MobX? 鈥

At the heart of MobX are three important concepts: Observables, Actions and Reactions.

Why is MobX not more popular? 鈥

MobX was a popular state management library for React that allowed you to create observable and reactive data models. However, with the introduction of React Hooks, MobX became less appealing and, sometimes, conflicted with React's philosophy.

Is MobX faster than Redux? 鈥

Redux may not be efficient when we compare it with other libraries, but it avoids unnecessary rendering. Redux works efficiently with large projects. Mobx gives a better performance, it creates event listeners that quickly update the UI. Redux requires a lot of boilerplate code to execute, which is difficult to set up.

Which is faster Redux or MobX? 鈥

Less ceremony: MobX reduces the need for boilerplate code typically associated with Redux, resulting in faster development time and reduced cognitive overhead.

What are the benefits of MobX? 鈥

MobX is unopinionated and allows you to manage your application state outside of any UI framework. This makes your code decoupled, portable, and above all, easily testable.

Should I use Redux or MobX? 鈥

Mobx is mainly used to develop the application fast and in less time. Redux developed applications generally take time because of their complexity. Mobx is less maintainable. Redux is more maintainable.

How do you persist in MobX? 鈥

To simply persist your MobX store use makePersistable . Pass a reference of the store ( this ) as the first argument. The second argument is the StorageOptions for persisting the store data.

What is MobX state management? 鈥

MobX stands out for its simplicity and ease of use, especially when compared to other state managers like Redux. MobX is a battle-tested library that uses functional reactive programming principles to automatically detect changes in your application state and update the user interface accordingly.

Is MobX better than Zustand? 鈥

MobX and Zustand are both state management libraries for JavaScript applications. Let's explore the key differences between the two. API Complexity: MobX provides a more advanced and complex API compared to Zustand.

What is MobX vs Redux? 鈥

Redux assists in the creation of applications that behave consistently across all platforms. It also simplifies the writing, testing, and debugging of code for developers. MobX is a battle-tested library that makes state management simple and scalable by transparently applying functional reactive programming (TFRP).

Why use MobX in Angular? 鈥

It allows you to automatically react to changes and update only the parts of the UI that need to be updated, making your app performant. With MobX you manage your app's state using mutable objects and classes. It also helps you create computed values and side-effects.

Why use MobX in flutter? 鈥

Understanding Flutter MobX

The Observer widget in MobX, which is a part of the build method, ensures that whenever any observable it's tracking observables values changes, it triggers a new build. It's a reaction to changes in the state.
